You can use your smartphone as a starter and create your first working blog in less than 30min.
Let skip all the story and move on to the business.
First things to note like we’ve discussed in our last topic on starting a blog as a beginner is picking a name for your blog.
After you’ve decide on the name, next is to check the availability of the name.
There are two way to starting a blog, you can start as a free blogger or get your own custom domain and a hosting account.
As a free blogger, there is limitation to things you can do to your blog, but if own your custom domain name and hosting right, you have the outright to do anything with your blog.
In this article we’ll be teaching you how to get your own custom domain and hosting right.
Let’s get started, like I said you’ll only need two things:
- Get a Domain name – The web address of your blog eg; www.yourdomainname.com (you can change the “yourdomainname” to any prefer name of your choice)
- Web hosting – A server to store your blog files and keep it online for others to browse and read at all times.
Now, let start with getting a Domain Name. As for me I got my domain name from WhoGohost, WhoGohost is Nigeria friendly and more cheaper, with ₦1,200 you can get a domain name with WhoGohost and they charge in Naira, so you don’t need to worry about exchange rate.
Click Here to sign up for WhoGohost account and get your custom domain.
I believe you’ve already get your domain name by now, let move on to the next phase of hosting your domain.
Hosting your account, I recommend namecheap, they are one of the best and leading hosting platform in the world, there hosting package are relatively cheap and they have the best customer support.
Sign up Here to namecheap.
After signing up successfully, choose a hosting package, you can start with shared hosting which cost about ₦5,700 you will get a free SSL certificate for one year.
After you successfully purchased your hosting account, your cpanel logins details will be send to you.
First thing to do is connecting your hosting account with your domain which is with another registral, you can do so by simply updating your DNS setting. (you can contact me directly on how to do that and I will put you through)
After you connect your hosting account with your domain name.
Next is to setup and launch your blog, login to your admin panel or cpanel as send to you by namecheap. once you see this page
congratulations! it means that your blog is already setup.
However, there are a few things that I’d recommend you do to ensure that it’s visible as soon as possible…
- Go to Settings > General (left sidebar)
- Add Site Title and Tagline (your blog name and tagline)
- Change your site address to your domain name.
- Add your email address (so you can reset your password later)
Once you’ve completed this, launch your blog by clicking “Coming Soon Active” at the top of WordPress dashboard and then “Launch Your Site”
Now that you’ve launched your blog, you’ll be able to see what can only be described as a skeleton of a website.
Next thing to do is to customize your blog, design your blog to make it look awesome.
Click on Appearance<theme on your admin dashboard to download any free theme of your choice, Install and publish your theme.
You can customize the theme layout by going to Appearance<customize on your admin dashboard, you should be able to see something like this
customize your theme layout and click on publish.
You’re now ready to post your first article.
When you’re first getting started, your site will be adorned with the default “Hello World” post.
To add your first post navigate to Dashboard > Posts > Add New.
From here, you can add the title and start writing amazing content for your new blog.
Next is to create a navigating menu for your blog. This is One of the most important aspects of good user experience on any new blog, the ease with which your new viewers can find the content for which they’re searching.
Luckily, creating a menu inside of WordPress is pretty straightforward.
To get started, simply go to Appearance<Menu.
From here, create and add a new title for your main menu and then, in the left panel of the menu editor, check the pages you want to appear on your new menu. Click “Add Menu”.
The checked pages should appear on the right panel of the editor and you can now rearrange their order by dragging the labels up and down.
Once you’re happy with your menu’s structure, you can display it on your website’s main header by checking the “Primary” location checkbox (the name depends on the theme you previously selected) in the menu settings and hit save.
Install Plugins (They’re Free), Plugins are one of the simplest (and cheapest) ways to extend your website’s functionality and increase the traffic and profits you generate each month.
Luckily, there are (quite literally) thousands of free plugins and libraries inside of WordPress and countless more on other external sites.
Congratulations, You’ve Made It, hat wasn’t so difficult, was it?
At this point, you should have your very own fully functioning blog up and running.
If you get stuck, don’t hesitate to email me and I’ll do my best to help you out.
